Kumarakom bird sanctuary is one of the most captivating bird sanctuaries in India situated in Kottayam district Kerala. It is also known as the Vembanad bird sanctuary because the place located near the banks of Vembanad lake. The sanctuary is spread across 14 acres of land. The location attracts a lot of residential fowl and the best number of migratory birds during specific times of the year. We can enjoy the 14 acres by walking through the specific pathways. Another enjoyable way of watching birds would be sailing in boats Vembanad lake or Kavanar river as this help to sightings of flying creatures which settle around the water region.
Earlier the land was a tree plantation. Englishman George Alfred Baker laid the foundations of Kumarakom village and the bird sanctuary. Later the Henry developed this bird sanctuary as more attractive for tourists. In the beginning, the sanctuary was formerly known as Baker's Estate. Now the bird sanctuary is managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.
During the migratory period can be a spot the famous Siberian Crane. During the breeding season, we can see the regional bird species such as Parrot, Flycatcher, Heron, Egrets, Indian darter, Little cormorant, Several species of kingfisher, Koel Owl Moorhen etc. Migratory birds Gull Teal Tern Flycatcher Siberian darter Siberian egrets etc... Some of the migratory birds coming from the Himalayas and few birds even from as far as Siberia. Houseboat and motorboats are available for birdwatching on the lake.
For the best and unforgettable experience will get between June and August. This is the time for the breeding season. So we can see a lot of residential birds in this sanctuary Time to visit the migratory birds the months of November to May.
